Silver Sixpence Co - But I'm not getting married!

Christmas Pudding SixpencesChristmas Pudding Sixpences
Yes, it was one of our sixpences in the BBC programme, "The Nation's Favourite Christmas Food" shown on the 17th December 2004. You can get yours here!

Christmas Pudding evolved from a runny concoction from the 14th century, of meat, spices, dried fruit and wine, boiled in a greased bag. It was called "frumenty", and was more of a soupy porridge than the solid, rather heavy treat we know today. It actually dates back to Roman Britain, and the Saturnalia festival held every year at the Winter Solstice. Fruitcakes and mincemeat pies are also thought to have evolved from "frumenty". Christmas Pudding, as such, was not a yearly tradition until Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, enjoyed a kind of Plum Pudding in Germany, and reintroduced it to Great Britain. Before that, despite being banned by the Quakers in 1644, George the First was served a very good Christmas pudding in 1714, the recipe for which is still in use today.

The tradition is for the coins to be put into the pudding mix and then every member of the family gives the mix a stir and makes a wish. If you have a sixpence in your portion on Christmas day it will bring you luck. Improve your chances with our Christmas Pud special 12 coin package.

For your Christmas pudding this year why not buy this velvet purse with 12 genuine sixpences from the reign of Elizabeth II.

Please note that these coins are genuine circulated coins and are made of cupronickel.

ChristeningChristening
The birth of a child is such a special and important time so needless to say there are many traditions attached to the event to ensure the health and prosperity of the new family member.

It is tradition to 'cross the baby's palm with silver'. A silver coin should be placed into the baby's palm so that the child grips it - this is traditionally to bring wealth and prosperity (REMEMBER to recover the coin immediately!!)

Sixpences are no longer minted so how about choosing a coin 100 years old - a genuine antique for a newborn.
