Charles I

There were a large number of sixpences minted during the reign of Charles I, some were dated and some were not. As with other hammered coins the portrait is very often weak but the reverse quite clear.

Charles I also issued some milled coinage (coins made by a machine) and these are amazingly detailed and quite rare.

The coinage also covered the English Civil War period so there is a huge variety of coins minted from provincial mints and also the highly desireable "siege pieces". These were 'coins' made with a crude stamp cut from silver trays or plate.

This whole period is covered with history, any coin from the reign of Charles I is a thing of beauty and a vital part of our history.

Charles I - Pre Civil WarCharles I - Pre Civil War
This Charles I sixpence is undated but is known to be the class 3A issue which means it was minted by the King in the Tower mint prior to the Civil War.

This coin was found on the Thames foreshore by a private collector! A lovely coin, bursting with history.

Charles I - Civil War
This Charles I sixpence is undated but is known to be the class 4C issue which means it was minted by Parliament in The Tower mint in 1642 or shortly after, making this a civil war coin!

The coin shows a great deal of "character" in that the strike was poor. The coin also looks as though it has been 'clipped'.
