Edward VIEdward VI
The first sixpence was introduced by Edward VI in 1551. It was made of fine silver and was quickly accepted by the people. Initially they were only minted in the Tower and at York. Edward was only 9 when he came to the throne but the legacy of the sixpence was to last 419 years.

A lovely example of the first sixpences to be minted during the middle 16th century. Hand made, these coins were not marked with a date. This is a good example with less than average wear, if you are vaguely interested in history this sixpence is for you.

Edward VI - 1551-1553
This is a fine example of a very rare sixpence. Most examples from this period are very worn and clipped, this sixpence shows good clear detail and has not been clipped. A lovely coin.

These were the first sixpences minted and are not dated. This coin will have been minted between 1551 and 1553 making it about 450 years old ! The mintmark is a Tun (barrel) meaning it was minted in the Tower mint in London.

If you are looking for a really special sixpence then you will not go far wrong with this beautiful coin.
