 | Charles I - 1625 - 1649 Charles I's reign was turbulent and this is reflected in the coinage. Most sixpences were minted in the Tower mint although many provincial mints issued coins. There were also siege coins minted during the English Civil War. A fine coin from this period, when the quality varied greatly, would be a coin with a good clear portrait. The provincial mints were - York, Aberystwyth, Aberystwyth Furnace, Oxford, Bristol, Exeter, Worcester, Shrewsbury and for the siege pieces - Newark and Scarborough. Siege coins are very rare and very expensive.
During the reign of Charles I the square of Covent Garden was laid out by Indigo Jones (1630), the world's first opera house opened in Venice (1637), the English Civil war started (1642).
