 | Commonwealth (Oliver Cromwell) - 1649 - 1660 Commonwealth sixpences - These were hammered coins and were fairly plain and featured the shield of St. George on the front (obverse) and the shield of St. George and Ireland on the back (reverse). Some of the earlier issues are fairly common but the later issues are very rare. Many coins are badly worn, bent or damaged and those in better than Fine condition are rare.. The 1655 and 1657 coins are very rare.
Coins featuring Oliver Cromwell himself were issued in 1658 and portray Cromwell as a Roman emperor with a laurel leaf crown. They are exceptionally rare and like Rolls Royces - if you have to ask how much they are . . . . . . you can't afford one!
During the commonwealth period Descartes died (1650), the pendulum clock was invented (1656), the Republic ended when Charles II was crowned King of England (1660).
