 | Edward VI - 1547 - 1553 The sixpence was introduced by Edward VI in 1551 and was quickly accepted by the public, largely due to the quality of the silver from which it was made. The coins were minted in the Tower and York mints the York minted coins being especially rare and valued by collectors. Coins from the Tower mint are still fairly common.
During the reign of Edward VI Ivan the Terrible became tsar of Russia (1547), Tintoretto painted 'The Last Supper' (1547), Nicholas Udall wrote the first English comedy 'Ralph Roister Doister' (1551).
