Huge quantities of coins were minted under the reign of Elizabeth I. An Elizabethan sixpence is easy to identify even if the date is not clear since they all (except for one very rare exception) had a rose behind the queen's head. An Elizabeth I sixpence in Very Fine condition is a thing of beauty and no coin collection would be complete without one.
During the reign of Elizabeth I William Shakespeare was born (1564), the Spanish Armada was defeated (1588), Sir Francis Drake died (1596), magnetism was discovered by English scientist William Gilbert (1600).
