Silver Sixpence Co - A brief history of the sixpence - Philip and Mary - 1554 - 1558

Philip and Mary - 1554 - 1558Philip and Mary - 1554 - 1558
Sixpences were not minted in 1553 or 1554. When they were reintroduced they had the novel feature of being dated. Previous to this coins were dated by their mint mark. Another interesting feature of these coins is that they featured busts of both Philip and Mary together a feature that had never been seen before. During this period sixpences were only minted at the Tower mint in London. Philip and Mary sixpences are fairly rare, coins in VF or EF condition are very difficult to find.

During the reign of Philip and Mary Lady Jane Grey was executed (1554), persecution of the protestants began (1555), the Archbishop of Canterbury was burned at the stake (1556).
