Silver Sixpence Co - Sixpence Store - Special Wedding Sixpence - Philip and Mary - 1554 - 1558

Philip and Mary

Sixpences were not produced during the reign of Mary but reintroduced under Philip and Mary. The coins bare busts for the first time because Parliament had proclaimed that Mary was unfit to rule alone because she was a woman. Also, it was hoped that the popularity of her husband Philip of Spain would be increased if he appeared on the coins.

Philip and Mary - 1554Philip and Mary - 1554
The only sixpence we have ever had from the reign of Philip and Mary. This sixpence has been bent and re-straightened in the classic Lovers Token way. This has obscured some of the legend and higher detail but the 54 in the date is still very clear.

These coins are special in that they were the first sixpences to be dated and also the first to have both the King and Queen on the front. They are very rare in conditions better than this example but when you think that it was made 112 years BEFORE the Great Fire of London it is hardly surprising.

Thisis a fabulous piece of our history - a definite must have.
