Edward VIII 1937

Edward VIII abdicated after only a short period on the throne to be with the woman he loved. Wallis Simpson was an American twice divorcee and to marry her would have created a constitutional crisis. Edward chose to follow his heart rather than his sense of duty and gave up everything to be with the woman he loved. Because his reign was so short there was no time to produce any coinage. In 1990 however, a coin was made. Maklouf, who was the chief designer of the Royal Mint for 30 years was asked to produce a coin in his own design had he been at the mint in Edward's time, 2,500 sixpences were minted. The coin is silver and is in proof condition, this means that it is in perfect condition. We call it the Lover's sixpence. We have just one coin left. If you would like something really special then this sixpence should fit the bill. Please remember that whilst this coin is silver and it is a sixpence it was not minted at the time, is not a copy of the original sixpence and was never legal tender. The larger scan makes the coin look dark, this is because the coin is bright silver and reflects the scanned light.

William IV - 1837

Coins from William IV are not that common. This example is in about average condition but is a nice bright coin. The reverse has a lot of very small scratches which look a lot worse on the scan than in real life. The date is crisp and clear.

Price: £39.95 ($ USD 64.72)

George I - 1723

Fabulous sixpence from 1723. At some point in it's 289 year history this sixpence was given as a "Love Token". This means it was bent twice. It has since been straightened but you can still see the lines where it was bent. It also had a hole drilled through it so that it could be worn on a chain. On the reverse of the coin are the letters "SSC" which stand for the South Seas Company that mined the silver used in the coin. A lovely piece of history.

Charles II - 1677

Stunning milled coin made just 11 years after the Great Fire of London! This coin is special because it is "milled", which means it was made by a machine. The machine used was as big as a house and powered by teams of horses, it was revolutionary, so much so it's inventor was murdered. This means it is smaller than the hammered coins and the definition is much clearer because of the amount of pressure that could be used. These coins are highly desireable and becoming incredibly scarce. Restocking a coin of similar high grade, will be very unlikely at this price level. If you are looking for something really special, this is it! A coin packed with 335 years of history. Fabulous!

Price: £400.00 ($ USD 648.00)

Bawbee - 1678

Bawbee - 1678

The Bawbee was originally a Scottish silver sixpence. Over time the Scottish were forced to debase their coinage, this means it was made out of copper instead of silver. It retained it's value but was not accepted outside Scotland. It ended up being valued at 1/2 a penny and the word "Bawbee" is now associated with something worthless. The front of the coin has the bust of Charles II. They are not worthless today though, Bawbees are quite uncommon. Please not that the Bawbee is included here because of it's rich history and connection with the sixpence. It is not silver and is bigger than the contemporary sixpence, we wouldn't advise you to place it in your shoe!!

Edward VI - 1551-1553

A lovely example of the first sixpences to be minted during the middle 16th century. Hand made, these coins were not marked with a date. This is a good example with less than average wear, if you are vaguely interested in history this sixpence is for you.
